MATTHEW 5:39 - Free From Revenge

A reflection on mercy, restraint, and the freedom found in letting go of revenge.

Jesus' words, "turn the other cheek," are often misunderstood as a call to weakness. In His time, a strike to the right cheek was commonly understood as a backhanded slap—an act meant to insult and humiliate more than to cause serious injury.

Instead of teaching passive acceptance of evil, Jesus challenged the instinct to retaliate. He called His followers to refuse the cycle of revenge and to respond with self-control rather than pride.

"You are free from the need for revenge."

reminds us that another person's actions do not have to determine our own. We are free to forgive, to seek justice without hatred, and to entrust ultimate judgment to God.
